Northwest Bypass Merano

The “Northwest Bypass Merano – Lot 2 (Küchelberg Tunnel)” construction project is a pivotal initiative to alleviate traffic congestion in Merano and its surroundings. The goal is to divert through traffic away from the city center and create a better connection between Val Passiria, Tirolo, and the MeBo expressway (Merano-Bolzano). This will not only improve traffic flow, but also enhance the quality of life for residents.

The Küchelberg Tunnel, the core element of the bypass, runs beneath Goethe street and Monte San Zeno, connecting to the existing link from Merano’s train station. The tunnel extends to the industrial area in Tirolo, where a roundabout facilitates continuation toward Val Passiria, Tirolo, and Maia Alta. Additionally, the bridge over the Passer River will be renewed and lowered as part of the construction works.

The tunnel excavation is carried out in two sections: near Goethe street, in loose soil, a pipe umbrella method is used, inserting pipes into the ground to ensure stability during excavation. In the second section, under Küchelberg, where the rock consists of granite and gneiss, blasting is employed. Up to 180 blast holes are drilled daily, filled with dynamite, and electronically detonated. The excavated material is removed, and the tunnel is secured with shotcrete and reinforcements.

Significant challenges arise from the variable geological conditions and the required stabilization measures under sensitive areas, such as school buildings.

The Küchelberg Tunnel is a milestone in South Tyrol’s traffic planning. Upon completion, it will greatly improve traffic conditions in Meran, providing lasting relief for the region.
