The Percha bypass in the Puster Valley is a major infrastructure project currently under construction, designed to relieve the village centre from heavy through-traffic and significantly improve road safety. The consortium, in which PLANTEAM plays a key role, is responsible for planning, site supervision and safety coordination, ensuring smooth progress throughout all construction phases.
At the heart of the project is a 2.3-kilometre tunnel built in both cut-and-cover and closed construction methods, which will guide future traffic efficiently around the village. A technical highlight is the world’s first use of the Jumbo Bi-Arm, an automated tunnelling system that increases safety while accelerating excavation progress.
The tunnel is being driven from two sides and passes beneath the settlement of Unterwielenbach. Once completed, the bypass will divert up to 26,000 vehicles per day away from the village centre, significantly reducing noise, emissions and congestion. Existing bottlenecks and sharp bends will be eliminated, creating a smoother and safer traffic flow.
As part of the wider mobility strategy for the Puster Valley, the Percha bypass also plays a key role in preparing the region for the 2026 Winter Olympics, supporting sustainable and high-performing transport solutions.
