The Grieserhof in Bolzano was fully renovated and expanded with two new buildings to create a contemporary senior residence within a protected historical setting. The historic “Villa Aufschnaiter” remains the architectural centerpiece and was carefully integrated into the new layout. Together, the additional structures frame the original building into a coherent ensemble and form sheltered outdoor areas with high spatial quality.
Today, the senior residence combines private living units, shared community spaces and several publicly accessible services. A café, day-care facilities, basic medical services, a chapel and various support functions make the Grieserhof an active meeting point within the neighbourhood. The surrounding park remains open to the public during the day, strengthening the relationship between the centre and its urban environment.
Architecturally, the project blends historical character with a restrained contemporary design language. Loggias, warm colours and subtle Mediterranean elements define the entrance area, while the new volumes respond to the proportions and materials of the historic structures. The result is a harmonious interplay of tradition and modern building culture that preserves the unique atmosphere of the site while meeting the needs of a next-generation senior residence.
PLANTEAM was responsible for overall site management in collaboration with Arch. Marco Rizzoli and handled the design of the museum area, accompanying the project through to completion in 2018.
