SS241 Eggental Road – Tunnel “Campegno”

In the narrow, geologically challenging Eggental Valley, a new approx. 1.6 km section of the SS241 was delivered to sustainably upgrade the link between Kardaun/Cardano and the Eggental. The core element is the 1,427 m-long Kampenn road tunnel, built using conventional tunnelling. It replaces previously exposed road sections in the gorge, bypassing rockfall hazard zones and significantly improving safety and year-round availability.
The project also included bridge structures over the Wildbach stream as well as extensive retaining works and riverbank protection to stabilize both the alignment and the watercourse corridor in the long term. At the portals and along particularly critical slope areas, targeted rockfall protection measures were implemented, including protective gallery/portal extensions to shield the carriageway. The overall concept combines robust construction with clear operational logic: fewer bottlenecks, smoother traffic flow, greater resilience to weather and natural hazards, and good maintainability.
The Kampenn Tunnel forms part of the SS241 bypass solution and was opened in late 2007.
